the sun will rise in the east is a book of journeys. It follows the arc of Yee I-Lann’s artistic practice through a sequence of essays and conversations, and photographic documentation of works made from 2011 to 2023. In doing so, it traverses different geographies and maps unfolding lines of thinking, bringing us along on an adventure across languages, and across philosophies for living in the world.
Born in 1971, Yee I-Lann lives and works in her hometown, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. With a long- standing interest in the Southeast Asian region and its global connectivities, her practice as an artist has cut across photomedia, text, textile, site-specific installation, and video. In recent years, she has been collaborating intensely with other makers to make mats.
