To Nourish with Love with Manju Saigal & Bettina Chua Abdullah
December 8 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pmRM10
Come meet the authors behind To Nourish with Love, Manju Saigal and Bettina Chua Abdullah, who will be speaking about their beautiful book, a food memoir that celebrates ideas found in the authors’ personal philosophies of feeding, sharing and nurturing. Tickets are RM10, and you will receive a RM10 voucher to use on event day.
About the book:
Friends Manju and Bettina share a strong belief that a cook’s respect and affection for food will always be felt by those fed. Based on Manju’s lifetime memories of cooking and feeding, the authors present each chapter by taste, drawing on stories and recipes that mirror life, its many celebrations and its different flavours. Drawing inspiration from her grandfather’s and parents’ lifetime commitment to teaching and caring, a theme of learning threads its way through the pages of the book.
In over 130 recipes, To Nourish with Love pays tribute to the food and tastes of an Indian home. Khatta celebrates her sparkling sours; Mitha is her joyful sweets; Taaza is the welcome fresh that is often found alongside the meals of heat and spice in the chapter Teekha. Namkeen is the section on salty and savoury foods that many find to be the most comforting, and Karhwa is a collection of game-changing bitter flavours.
Manju spent the early part of her life in Mussoorie, a small town at the foothills of the Himalayas. Though she has travelled extensively and lived in major cosmopolitan cities of southeast Asia, she still considers herself a small-town girl at heart. As an entrepreneur, she set up a successful fashion business in Singapore, but her true inspiration and happiness always came from her family tradition to nourish all through food, education, and love. She is a firm believer in conservation of resources, be it the home kitchen or in her catering business in Malaysia. Always ready to share, through knowledge or a meal, at Manju’s cooking classes, most who arrive as strangers leave as friends. She cherishes her many roles of daughter, wife, mother, friend, but the role that gives her the most joy and fulfilment is being grandmother to her two precious grandchildren.
Bettina Chua Abdullah
After multiple incarnations as an award-winning international business news anchor, property developer and culture entrepreneur, Bettina Chua Abdullah returned to writing, her first love, in fits and starts in 2018, with the long-form captions for Over Penang, an exhibition and book of drone photography that won the (Malaysia) National Library Book of the Year award. In 2019 she edited and published Telltale Food, an anthology of food writing essays selected from an award she had set-up in 2017. In January 2020 she commenced her full-time writing journey working on To Nourish with Love. She lives between Petaling Jaya, Penang and Oxford, but her restless heart suffers from wanderlust and compels her to shift horizons: leaving the desert of the familiar in search of new spaces, encounters and worlds to write about.
